Natural Remedies for Burns

The first step to be taken when someone has gotten burned is to submerge the affected area in cold water. Burns usually occur with boiling water, hot oil or grease, the oven, or the sun. If the burns are first degree burns (mild) they may show redness and swelling of the skin. Usually, this kind of burns do not need medical intervention (unless it is an area larger than the size of your hand), and they can be treated with home remedies. Medical care is recommended for second and third degree burns.

Cold water: Immediately after a burn, put the affected area under cold running water for 20 minutes. If you do not have water you can use cold milk.

Cover and protect: Soak a small towel in cold water, wring, and cover the burn. Secure with a bandage. The bandage should not be tight.

Blisters: Do not burst. Clean carefully and apply an antiseptic cream.

Aloe Vera Gel: Gently rub aloe vera gel from a fresh leaf. This will keep the burn free of bacteria, and will reduce the pain. It will also help with the scarring.

Mustard: Applying abundant mustard (the kind used for sandwiches) on the burn is a popular home remedy.

Sliced mushrooms: Apply mushroom slices to the affected area. It will relieve the pain and help scarring.

Lavender oil: If the burn is not too serious, apply lavender oil to prevent the formation of a blister.
