Aromatherapy

This method uses essential oils as its primary medium. Each essential oil contains different properties. For example, some are soothing while others are stimulants. Others are antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal.

Essential oils have been used throughout history by the Egyptians, Persians, and the French. Even the Bible mentions them. Recently, the use of aromatherapy has gained considerable popularity in the United States. In England, there are 25 schools dedicated to study the properties of these substances.

There are four ways to use essential oils:

In a massage - Dilute the essential oil in a base of vegetable oil.

Inhalations - Put some drops of oil in a bowl with boiling water and inhale the steam.

Bath tub - Add 6 droplets to the tub water. Stay in the water for at least 10 minutes.

Vaporizer - Add 2 or 3 drops of oil to a simmer pot with little water and light up a candle underneath.

Basic mixing of essential oils:

You should never apply undiluted essential oils to the skin. Always use a base oil, also known as a carrier, to dilute essential oils.

For bathing - Recommended carriers are bubble bath or unscented white lotions. Mix 30 drops of essential oil in 20 teaspoons of carrier. For the elderly, children, and the sick, use 16 drops of essential oil mixed in 20 teaspoons of carrier. And for babies under 2, 8 drops of essential oil in 20 teaspoons of carrier.

For a massage - Recommended carriers are sweet-almond, grapeseed, or sunflower oils. Mix 10 drops of essential oil in 7 teaspoons of carrier.

How does aromatherapy work?

The chemicals flowing from the oil act on the brain influencing mood and the hormonal system. home-remedies-site.com The massage oil relaxes muscles and improves circulation thus helping to relieve pain and regenerate tissues.

When is it used?

Essential oils are most commonly used for problems caused by stress such as headaches and insomnia. They are also used for digestive problems, colds, menstrual problems, relaxation, to relieve burns, and to hasten the scarring process.

Most frequently used oils:

To decongest: Eucalyptus, mint, pine, or lavender.

To relax: Chamomile oils, jasmine, or lavender.

Mood enhancer: Olive, rosemary, rose, grapefruit, or ylang ylang.

Stimulants: Olive, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper.

Precautions:

Do not ingest oils unless indicated by your doctor. With the exception of lavender and tea tree oils, never apply undiluted essential oils on the skin. If you are pregnant or if you have epilepsy or any medical condition, please consult a doctor before using them. Keep essential oils out of the reach of children.
